Second Update on WISC’s 6th Global International Studies Conference
Dear members of the WISC community,
Following our message from April 2020, and in view of the continuing pandemic’s worldwide impact and the uncertainty surrounding 2021, we have taken the difficult decision to postpone to 2022 the 6th Global International Studies Conference in Buenos Aires. As you know, the Conference was originally planned for July 15-17, 2020, and it was later rescheduled to June 30-July 2, 2021. As the wise aphorism goes, “third time lucky” (or in Spanish, la tercera es la vencida).
In close cooperation with the local organizers in Buenos Aires, the new date of June 29th-July 1st, 2022 (Wednesday-Friday) has been agreed for the WISC Conference. Our fabulous location at UCA in Buenos Aires remains unchanged, and we hope to keep as much as we can of the current program. We are aware, though, that with the Conference taking place two years after it was first scheduled, there will inevitably be changes.
We hope you will be able to join us in late June 2022. The original program included over 35 thematic Sections, about 250 panels and roundtables, and around 1000 participants from more than seventy countries in three days of intensive interaction. By setting the date well in advance, we would like to signal our confidence on the eventual return to some kind of normalcy, if not in 2021, hopefully then in 2022.
The preparations for the Conference will now hibernate until an additional call for Sections opens in July 2021 until October 2021. It will be followed by an additional Call for Papers (October-December 2021). Registration will reopen in February 2022. Participants who have registered and paid in 2020 will be reimbursed and will be invited to register again in early 2022.
New panels and papers discussing the implications of this pandemic for IR and international politics, and humankind in general, will, of course, be possible. We remain ever more committed to turn the (re)postponed meeting of the Global International Studies Conference into a global forum to exchange views on our common destiny, the true meaning of the ‘international’ around the world, with multiple voices and alternative orders that might emerge in the months and years ahead.
Finally, WISC is consulting with its member associations and the Section Chairs of the 6th Global International Studies Conference about a series of activities to stay active and connected through 2021. In this context, we would be grateful to you to respond to this survey too (click here for survey).
We wish you all good health and high spirits, keep sane and realistically optimistic in these challenging coronavirus times.
